"Mighty Morphing Power Presidents"

"Mighty Morphing Power Presidents"

well, with a few hours to spare…i found time to finish the final project for the digital media class.  time, however, was not easy to make room for.  i am pleased with the finished result but still don’t know if it is as good as it canbe-considering my lack of knowledge of the medium i used and what it can do.  make no mistake though, i worked ferociously and intensely on this project to make it work-visually and conceptually. in hindsight, taking 3 classes this summer was ambitious and time consuming (as i am currently enrolled in another class) but i am glad i did it.  it felt good to make such a wide variety of art and to learn so much about new media art.  for information regarding this final piece, please continue to read the ”paper” i have written regarding it and my experience.  *you’ll be able to tell when the “paper” part of this blog begins when i begin using proper punctuation, etc.

My final piece entitled “Mighty Morphing Power Presidents” is meant to be political, humorous, and ambigious (and possibly disturbing).  Although I despise telling people what my artwork is about (I feel it is up to each person to interpret my art and all art for that matter, anyway they want) and don’t enjoy spoon feeding the viewer what to look for, I understand it is a requirement of the project and class to do so.  However, my philosophies on creating art is to search for and to create the “new” and by “new” I simply mean to progress art forward through invention, interpretation, and imagination.  To me, landscapes and portraits or anything done in direct observation or mimicry of the natural world does nothing for art-it is just a hobby being practiced by those who are bored and appear to have a skill.  But to create something new from ones mind that makes people question and wonder about the concept or image itself and not question and wonder how the skill transferred on paper, is art.  So I attempted to create “new” in this final piece with the direction of my own ambition and assistance of a digital medium.

As I have stated in previous blogs, this piece has traveled many avenues to get where it is now.  But where it is relates back to my own philosophies and style regarding art.  “Heads” seem to always pop up as the main focus or drive for my artwork.  The fact that the final project guidelines were fairly open made it an obvious choice and challenge to create a piece related to my on going theme of heads but with this new medium.  Although I truly did want to create something completely “new,” as in not combine images but create my own (like David Ho) I suppose I did accomplish this by definitely creating a new image that no one has ever seen before.

When looking at the piece, hopefully the viewer is confused.  Confusion in art is something that should be embraced more and sucked in as a friendly emotion and not a repulsive reaction.  The confusion will be “who to focus on?”  I have layered an image of George W. Bush with Abraham Lincoln.  The opacity makes it so the viewer can see both at the same time but can only focus on one.  I did a lot of work with placement so the features line up exactly and work with the beard on Lincoln to also line up with the different angle Bush is facing.  I took great care in the faces…hopefully it goes unnoticed by it being so seamless.  Again, I would rather people not question how I did it but why I did it.  The craftsmanship and technical aspect is just a nice bonus in a work of art.

The reason why I chose Presidents as my theme goes back to my “head” theme but this time I wanted a head that everyone could recognize so that confusion would play a more important role.  I presume people will see this however they want and literally they can see it however they want but if you want to dig deep you can guess that I am showing an overlapping of a “good” President with a “bad” president or that politicians in general are “monsters” (which may be a reason I added the animal eyes) or President Bush loves money so much he foresees himself on an American bill.  But in looking deeper to the piece the viewer will see that the background is divided into 2 sections.  The right side of the image is Bush themed with a map of Kuwait oil fields and an image of actual oil fields while the left side is Lincoln themed with a map of Gettysburg and an actual image of a scene from the Civil War.  So I was also interpreting these Presidencies on war and what makes a war worthwhile-whose war was better?  This piece is going to be really, really deep to some and to others it will be offensive and yet to others it will be satirical and to me…all answers are right.  If a person got an emotion, thought, or feeling when looking at it, then I did my job.

my “good cop, bad cop” or “mighty morphing power presidents” final project is coming along.  i feel at ease with how things are looking and look forward continuing on with the addition of more twists here and there.  i am trying to make the two faces pop out at the same time to create confusion as well as keep the viewer interested with the overall composition of the piece.  there is a lot i want to do and can do but i don’t want to kill this piece as i truly am enjoying the production of it as a student AND an artist.

new idea off of old idea

welp.  as promised from the last post…i basically changed my idea.  although i did like the concept of what i was going to do with the “see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil” theme and the presidents, etc. i drifted away from it once i started just applying my images of ideas into photoshop and playing around.  a few happy accidents later, i arrived here:

aesthetically, i am really enjoying where this is going.  conceptually i have decided to morph two presidents: abraham lincoln and george w. bush.  i normally do not create political art because i feel i have no business talking politics anyway.  but i am combining 2 presidencies of “good” and “bad” as seen by the american public, although the lincoln presidency wasn’t really all good times either.  so at the moment i am working on getting the images combined and the combination outcome will hopefully be somewhat grotesque and extreme.  this final result will be purely driven by aesthetics judged by myself.  i mean no disrespect to either figure by any manipulation…but i am going for an odd image to end with.  on either side of the face will be memorable images from both presidencies-good and bad.  i  have a feeling i will be calling this “good cop, bad cop” or something trite like that.

final project narrows?

with the green light of the “head” theme given, i find myself excited and nervous.  excited to begin a new project with my themes and yet nervous to excel and live up to my own expectations.  its not an excuse (however saying “its not an excuse” really makes it an excuse) but i will have to remind myself this new medium i am using is new to me and frustration will be part and necessary for the growth aspect of this project and in general my art.

here is a final rundown (presently) of my project:   although i generally do not create heads of identifiable people, i am going to start out with a very identifiable person in this piece-ab lincoln from the $5 bill.  so  i am going to make this a fairly conceptual piece in relationship with politics.  there is a lot of turmoil right now in our nation with the war, gas, economy, etc. so i wanted a famous president (maybe not the most liked or well respected, but a president nonetheless.)   i also wanted to chose a figure who was/is seen as being passionate about whatever they represent however they can’t speak, listen, or see much of what is going on with the world.  other ideas i tossed around were soldiers or a famous work of art (like the mona lisa.) basically i chose to start with a recognizable image because i don’t want to draw one with the media i am using…i want to use the media i am using as best possible.

so the head will be ab lincoln but it will be a series of 3 images and each image will be altered differently.  again, this may go back to political, but i will apply the theme of “hear no evil, see no evil,  speak no evil.” the application of each “evil” in each of the 3 images will evoke my  own personal style in that i will attempt to create interesting/spooky/uneasy additions to each face.  i am also going to keep referring and attempt to get inspiration from the art work of david ho, craig marshall smith, and francis bacon as well as myself.  i am excited.  but who knows…this is just a start.

better build-a-bear?

and you can have one too...for only $59.99!

so i finished the revised build-a-bear.  i am not sure i am even entirely in love with it, but at least it is done.  it was an experience trying to figure everything out the way i wanted it to look and for the most part that image you see before you is fairly close to what i had in my head.  i really could have gone in a more satirical route but decided to make it look somewhat believeable.  i tried to keep it kid friendly with the wave motion of the words, kept the circle encompassing the bear, and even the button and thread in the bottom phrase “workshop.”  i eyedropped the colors of the bear to match my wording and i chose my font to be more sturdy and to have a “build” quality to them, yet playful.  i lowered the opacity of the lettering to better match the lower/fuzzy resolution quality of the original logo image. i had trouble with the “w” in workshop making it fit behind the red button (slash i was trying to finish quickly) and could not center the actual image of the build-a-bear…that is annoying to look at, i know.

i couldn’t resist however adding a bit of humor into the wording as my son just got one of these bad boys i had give a bit of a dig to this money making machine.  can you tell what i did?  :-)

i have a un-spoken theme in a lot of my work (and even in my own art collection) of heads.  i recently just noticed (or allowed myself to notice) that my work seems to always gravitate to a head of some sort.  and when i make a head, i do it my way.  i include things, take away things, and make “nameless faces” not recognizable or even identifiable to a specific person.  most of my inspiration is drawn from my relationship and friendship with my favorite artist craig marshall smith, a local artist who was my professor in my undergrad at metro state university.  although i should give myself some credit in that i create this drive myself as well.  it is funny though as i try to tell myself and others that i am actually afraid of drawing the human face but always return to it in some way or another.

so that leads me to my final project in this class.  if the project is allowing us to be as free as we want, having this new medium at my finger tips at this moment automatically makes me believe and is basically giving me the green light to try and create a head to keep this theme of mine rolling.  i emphasize try as i have ideas inside my head but translating that into a computer, a foreign language for me, will literally be like traveling to a new country and trying to speak the language after a few days.  i feel i am getting some basics down pretty well and that added with my excitement will help me persevere and drive me to hopefully something i will personally be pleased with as a student and ideally as an artist.

per request here is the presentation i have prepared.  i have heard of the name david ho before.  being an art teacher, i try to stay in-tune with all the big names of up-and-coming artists (as well as canonized) artists.  and there almost seems to be this game with artsy folk involved with the art world of knowing more artists than anyone else (especially the person you are talking with at that moment.) but going back to david ho, one of my students mentioned his name and showed me an image of his once before and it stuck.  in fact, i love talking with my students on various artists they are hearing about.  street art is huge right now with my little ones with names like banksy, blu, and blek le rat dominating a lot of conversations.

anyhoo, david ho. his work is intriguing to me because of how obscure it is.  some may say freaky or obscene.  i enjoy that about art (for the most part and to a certain extent.)  david ho definitely creates new art.  not only that  the medium he is using is “new” but the images he creates are new to the art world-that they have never been seen before in any medium.  they are surreal, grotesque and beautiful.  i don’t believe they are meant to be understood and that may trouble some people as people generally like to know what they are looking at and what is going on.  david ho throws that out of the window and that is what i like to do with my own work as well.  confusion shouldn’t be seen as annoying when looking at art…it should be embraced. let the art be what it is…art.

build-a-bear font…eww.

here is the image and font of build-a-bear.  again, i recognize and understand that it is a business marketed toward kids…but give the kids some credit and give the mature adults a break and change this font!  and i plan to (or at least try.)

the guidelines for our final project are undefined yet so that makes basically everything an option…which is good and bad.  as an artist, i enjoy the freedom of choosing whatever i want to make, however i want to make, for reasons of my own, and to create something new (what i feel art is all about anyway.)  but as a student i need to be told what to do-i don’t want to do things wrong.  this then creates a problem for me.  i have ideas but nothing that i really NEED to express at this current time.  my artwork comes to me in an idea, festers in my head for about 3 months until it final takes control of my body and makes me release it.  when i don’t have that urge and am being forced to make something valid and useful for my own work…it makes me feel i am cheating my own philosophy on art or at least speeding up my process way too fast.  either way, i know that this is a class and as a teacher i know art must have projects and i have to get over my little issue so here are some things i am tossing around:  the female figure (again), guns, and faces.

there are so many silly logos and poorly chosen fonts out there that i really don’t know which one to either try and improve or make fun of.  children’s cereal is hilarious to me as to the lengths marketing agencies go to in making their cereal fun!  but i suppose that is just all part of the game.  i am tempted to create something for american airlines…just because it is there and because after they changed logo’s 30+ years ago (and with the original designer claiming it is so perfect it doesn’t need to be touched) that i would enjoy doing something with that purely out of spite but there is a company out there that i feel REALLY needs to change something about their font and that is build-a-bear.  now i am sure that there is some story behing why they chose this weak, scratchy, unfinished looking font but i think it looks terrible.  but perhaps some kid wrote down build-a-bear on paper and the ceo loved it or the ceo tried to make a childlike font on paper and just ran with it…either way i get an upset stomach when i look at it and especially when i notice ALL their wording is in this font.  so this is my mission…to play with build-a-bear font.  pictures to follow.
